He originally took up swimming at age nine. His friend and fellow Colombian wheelchair basketball player Rodney Terry Hawkins then introduced him to the sport. "After many swimming competitions, I had a problem with a coach, and that's where my best friend Rodney comes in. He played basketball and he said to me, 'Come play and see how it goes'.
