Before her impairment, she was a professional racehorse trainer. (3athlon.nl, 28 Apr 2021; transition.nl, 15 Oct 2020)

She began the sport seriously in 2016. She had first been introduced to the disciplines of Para triathlon during her rehabilitation following her accident. "In the rehabilitation centre I was introduced to handcycling and I also swam a lot there. I didn't want to grow out of my chair, so I kept moving." (3athlon.nl, 28 Apr 2021; transition.nl, 15 Oct 2020; margret-ijdema.nl, 16 May 2020)

She took part in a study on the effects of exercise on rehabilitation for Heliomare, a support service for people with impairments in the Netherlands. "I was so fanatical in those tests that the researcher tipped me off to her husband, Bas de Bruin, the national Para triathlon coach. When Bas asked me to come and train, I didn't feel like I was good enough. I did participate in handcycle races, but I saw that mainly as a hobby. Besides, I had a strong desire to have children. I wanted to be a mother first and if that didn't work out, I could always switch to plan B. Fortunately, I was eventually able to achieve both goals, but I wanted to wait until my girls were a bit older. When Bridt and Anna were 11 and 10, I started training with them and now I want to continue until Paris." (3athlon.nl, 28 Apr 2021; transition.nl, 15 Oct 2020)

Impairment Details
She has paraplegia as the result of a horse riding accident in 2000. "I was riding a horse called Narrow Escape. That was a bit of an appropriate name. The horse was galloping on a track and there was probably a pit, a molehill or a rabbit hole and we went over together. It was pure bad luck. I ended up under my horse and I didn't really feel anything. Because I wasn't in pain, I thought I'd be back in the training stable a week later, but that turned out to be something else. I ended up staying in a rehabilitation centre for a year and the feeling in my legs did not come back." (3athlon.nl, 28 Apr 2021; transition.nl, 15 Oct 2020; nhnieuws.nl, 07 Feb 2021)

General
EXPLORING THE COURSE
She thoroughly explores competition courses before races, which she says comes as a result of her accident. "I fell on the back of my head when I went over my horse and I did suffer some injuries. I've had an incredible amount of trouble finding the right direction since then. I can get lost in my own backyard, so to speak. During a race I am sometimes literally squinting with pain and sometimes I overlook obstacles, or I don't know exactly where to leave the course. That causes a lot of stress, which is why I have to explore a course very extensively. I often do that on my own and I really take my time." (transition.nl, 15 Oct 2020)
