Coach Crisanto Angeles introduced him to Para taekwondo. "My best friend had been telling me to try the sport for a long time but I was too shy. He invited me since he knew that I was always being bullied. I did not allow myself to be bullied so I fought back. At first, I declined his invitation since I was very shy. Then coach Angeles came, he explained my potential to me, after all, it's the legs that are used in the sport. I just listened to him and then I tried." TRAINING
He trained alongside able-bodied taekwondo athletes ahead of the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, including Filipino taekwondoka Kurt Barbosa. "When Kurt was preparing for the Olympics, we trained together, and it was inspiring." (spin.ph, 19 Aug 2021)

EARLY DAYS
He played basketball growing up but decided to leave the sport due to bullying. "[I joined taekwondo] to earn their respect so that they would think differently of me. When I began competing [with able-bodied taekwondokas], I gradually gained their respect. It was here [in taekwondo tournaments] that I first felt welcome, that I had a team, and the support of the people here, especially when I got a medal. Even in the national team, they [his able-bodied counterparts] are with me to train, they are my sparring partners. I never felt that I was different. Before, I always hid my arm because I was very shy. Now [speaking in 2021] I can stand up for myself and can walk straight. I'm not shy anymore. I want people to see that I can fight for our country." (spin.ph, 20 Aug 2021; rappler.com, 18 Aug 2021; cnnphilippines.com, 16 Aug 2021)
