He began playing table tennis in 1989 at age 12 in Batang, Indonesia. He competed in able-bodied table tennis until 2009, and took up Para table tennis in 2010. "The fact that there was a chance to compete at the Paralympic Games was my main motivation to return. I wouldn't be able to reach the Olympic Games if I kept on competing in the able-bodied events." (cnnindonesia.com, 03 Feb 2021; Pemprov DKI Jakarta YouTube channel, 07 Sep 2018; Athlete, 25 Oct 2015)

"Taking up table tennis and being an athlete was just a coincidence. None of my family members were athletes. There was a ping pong table next to our house in Batang, Indonesia, and it all started from there. My brothers and I always played after school. My parents saw that I had a bigger passion for the sport compared to my brothers. So they encouraged me to take it further." (Pemprov DKI Jakarta YouTube channel, 07 Sep 2018)

General
EARLY DAYS
He says that winning an Indonesian national able-bodied table tennis title in 2000 was an important moment in his career. Following the victory he played able-bodied table tennis internationally for almost a decade before making the switch to Para table tennis with the goal of competing at the Paralympic Games. "When I completed my junior phase, players my age were called to join the national senior team, and I was the only player left out. I heard that my impairment was a reason for that. So, winning the 2000 National Championships was quite an achievement for me. It was the beginning of my journey with the national senior team. I always think that my right hand is not something that belittles me, because I can still achieve and be motivated."
