"Normally in schools you have football as the club or the big sport. For some reason it was table tennis [in his school] and the first time I went, I picked up a bat and the guy said, 'Have you ever played before?' And I said, 'No, never played before'. And he said, 'You're talented, you can go far'. And from there I excelled in it. I was struggling in school and my academia was not as strong as my physical education side. I'd never been told that I was talented before so I thought I might as well give it a shot. Table tennis felt different right from the beginning. That's what made me carry on and want to go to school. I knew that at the end of the day I've got table tennis. Table tennis was a way for me to be positive and excel in my academics and outside of school as well." (bttad.org, 25 Jan 2016; Some Essex Lad and a Paralympian podcast, 04 Nov 2020)
