His father Greg Van Emburgh played professional tennis. He won six Association of Tennis Professionals [ATP] doubles titles and reached the Wimbledon men's doubles semifinals in 1990. He required an operation due to ulnar nerve entrapment in his elbow in 2018. (Athlete, 22 Aug 2021)

In 2016 he underwent spinal fusion surgery, which led to complications including a blood clot in his left femoral vein that left him in intensive care. Three months after the operation his incision opened in two places, draining abnormal fluid. He underwent further surgery in November that year, and a month later he competed at the US Para Open. A month after that he suffered a fractured femur, which required another operation.
