She was diagnosed with Perthes' disease, a disorder affecting the hip joint, in November 2012. She had to undergo daily physiotherapy, and was able to return to training in April 2014. (sportsaid.org.uk, 02 Dec 2014)

She was inspired to get involved in Para sport after watching British swimmer Ellie Simmonds compete at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. She was introduced to Para swimming at a Playground to Podium assessment day in 2012 in Northampton, England. "Before the [swimming] season started in September [2012], I went to the Aquatics Centre in London, where I watched the Paralympic GB athletes competing. The excitement surrounding the London [Paralympic] Games was definitely a catalyst to the start of my swimming career."
