She began swimming at age six, and started competing in able-bodied swimming the following year after watching a competitive team train next to her in a pool. She switched to Para swimming after being disqualified from multiple events. "At the age of ten I was already 11th in the Netherlands among able-bodied swimmers. Because I was often disqualified on the breaststroke, as you have to tap with both hands, I ended up in the Paralympic world." (janvolwerk.com, 18 Jul 2020; chantallezijderveld.org, 24 Mar 2020; Facebook page, 06 Mar 2019; cruyff-foundation.org, 06 Aug 2018)
:
She was inspired to compete at an elite level in Para swimming after volunteering at the 2010 World Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands. "I realised that I also wanted to be as fast as the athletes who were competing there, and win medals at the highest level. The athletes just inspired me that much." (Facebook page, 06 Mar 2019; paralympic.org, 28 Mar 2018)

She trains 27 hours a week. "I now do shorter, but heavier training sessions. Because I swim less distances, I have more energy left. I can put that energy into swimming better in the important and heavier sets. I already notice the effect because I can pay much more attention to my technique. Because I am fresher, I can get more out of my training and I swim better." (zwijndrecht.dekombinatie.nl, 26 Oct 2020; chantallezijderveld.org, 03 Apr 2019)

"Swimming has been very important to me because when I'm swimming I feel free, and I don't feel like I'm impaired. When I'm in the water, swimming is not that hard for me." (paralympic.org, 12 Jan 2020)
:
In 2019 she was nominated for Paralympic Athlete of the Year by the Netherlands Olympic Committee and Netherlands Sports Federation [NOC*NSF]. (Instagram profile, 01 Dec 2019)

In 2014 she received a Sporting Talent award in Zwijndrecht, Netherlands. (weekbladdebrug.nl, 21 Jan 2015)

General
AVENGING RIO
She said she is aiming to win gold at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo to make up for her failure to win the S9 100m breaststroke at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where she finished third. "Even though it wasn't the competition that I had hoped for, Rio was very special for me because it helped me to realise that you can't always win. I was there to get the gold medal, but I had a lot of insecurities because I had won a couple of things and I felt that I had to prove something. I wasn't too scared at first, but when you keep winning medals, you just feel the pressure. And that's why Rio taught me a lot, and that's why I continue to swim because I didn't win there." (paralympic.org, 12 Jan 2020)

PROMOTING PARA SPORT
She created her own website to promote her swimming and the image of Para sports in general. "When I was young people were not very nice, especially because I didn't have a hand. I was very insecure and because I got bullied, I think it taught me to speak up and to just be myself. People with a disability are often seen as a kind of stereotype, but Para athletes also train day in, day out, in my case 27 hours a week. Para sport must become more sexy to become more well known. From time to time I like to let my creativity flow on my website, and put something beautiful together." (paralympic.org, 12 Jan 2020; chantallezijderveld.org, 03 Apr 2019)

OTHER ACTIVITIES
She has been an ambassador for the Johan Cruyff Foundation in the Netherlands since age 14. (LinkedIn profile, 31 Dec 2020; chantallezijderveld.org, 03 Apr 2019)
