In October 2014 she underwent a double-leg osteotomy. The surgery involved her tibia and fibula bones being broken, screws installed and her ankles rotated to realign with her knees. She was in a wheelchair until January 2015. (swimming.ca, 25 Aug 2016; swimming.ca, 02 Apr 2016)

In 2011 she experienced numbness and tingling in her arms while swimming. An MRI scan revealed a bone poking into her spinal column, which was causing nerve damage. She had surgery, which resulted in a month out of the pool. (Facebook page, 27 Apr 2015)

She played basketball, softball and football at high school. "I come from a very athletic family, so sports have always been a big part of my life. Throughout both the soccer and softball seasons, the other girls got faster, they grew taller, and keeping up with them was becoming more and more difficult and I was so frustrated, but when one door closes, another one opens. That door was the front entrance of the Sungod Recreation Pool in Delta, British Columbia. My brother was in swim club before and his coach told me that I will be very good if I started.
