General
DIFFICULT UPBRINGING
Born with a club foot, a crooked spine and foetal alcohol syndrome [FAS], he was operated on 12 times shortly after birth. Both his parents had problems with alcohol and drug addiction, and he was often left alone in their apartment. At age five, a youth welfare officer removed him from the family, and he was taken in by a foster family several years later. When he was age 11 he was informed that his biological mother had passed away. At age 18 he was allowed to re-establish contact with his biological father. At the 2019 German Championships in Berlin, Germany, both his biological father and his foster parents watched from the stands. (tagesspiegel.de, 23 Mar 2020)
