He began swimming at age seven at school. He stopped swimming in grade 10 because he wanted to play a team sport, and took up football for a while, before returning to swimming. (Athlete, 09 Sep 2019)

He began swimming, along with other activities like cycling and playing the drums and piano, to help strengthen his upper body and improve coordination. "I wouldn't say I'm sporty, just competitive. I don't think I'm naturally good at things, I'm just a person who practises a lot. I love playing sport. You get so much testosterone and endorphins. And the adrenaline - it's addictive."
