General
LATE BEGINNING
He has been enthusiastic about sports from an early age, but he was initially reluctant to compete in Para sport as it would mean admitting to himself that he was different. He decided to take up Para swimming at age 18. "I arrived at the pool to swim and a Para swimming training session was under way. Coach Carlos Mota and [fellow Portuguese Para swimmer] David Grachat saw me swimming and at the end the coach made me a proposition. I accepted the challenge. It was a different time then. I was more mature. I accepted my impairment. I stopped evading the issue and began talking openly about it." (revistasauda.pt, 02 Nov 2018)

MEDICAL PROCEDURE
At age seven he underwent surgery to lengthen his Achilles tendon. (revistasauda.pt, 02 Nov 2018)

FURTHER EDUCATION
He began studying for a master's degree in applied pharmaceutical sciences after receiving a grant from a charitable organisation in Lisbon, Portugal. The money meant he was able to combine his studies with his training schedule. "I wanted to return to school, but this grant helped me to make that decision. That allowed me to quit my job and to focus on my studies." (record.pt, 24 Nov 2019; dn.pt, 16 Nov 2019)
