General Interest

General
Japan qualified for Tokyo as host nation and are making their fourth Paralympic Games appearance in the sport. They first competed at the 2000 Games in Sydney, where they posted victories over the United States of America, Australia and the Republic of Korea to finish ninth out of 12 teams. Four years later in Athens they could only manage a single victory against Greece in the playoff for second-last place out of eight teams. Their most recent Paralympic appearance came at the 2008 Games in Beijing, where they failed to win a single set in defeats to the Islamic Republic of Iran, Brazil, Egypt, the People's Republic of China and Iraq, finishing the tournament last out of eight teams.

Japan have made three world championship appearances. At the most recent edition in 2018 they lost all three pool matches in straight sets to the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Russian Federation and Germany, as well as a 3-0 loss to Iraq in their first classification match. They managed to end the tournament on a positive note, defeating Rwanda 3-0 to avoid last place and finish 15th out of 16 teams.
