General Interest

General
The People's Republic of China are making their fourth Paralympic appearance in Tokyo, having qualified through a second-place finish behind the Islamic Republic of Iran at the Asia Oceania championships in 2019. The Iranian team had already qualified for Tokyo at the previous year's world championships, meaning the Chinese team benefitted from the sole Paralympic berth on offer at the continental tournament.

The Chinese team's best Paralympic performance has come when they hosted the 2008 Games, as they won a single group match against Iraq and both their classification matches over Japan and Brazil to finish ranked fifth out of eight teams. At London 2012 they posted one group win over Rwanda and a single classification match victory against Great Britain to finish in seventh place out of 10 teams.

At the 2016 Games in Rio, the Chinese found themselves in a tough group, losing to eventual winners the Islamic Republic of Iran and runners-up Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Ukraine. They managed to avoid a last-place finish by beating the United States of America in the classification match for seventh place.

On the world stage the Chinese team have competed at the past four editions of the world championships, with a sixth-place finish in 2006 their best result. At the most recent edition in 2018 they defeated the US team, the Netherlands and Rwanda to finish top of their group, dropping only one set along the way, but were outclassed in straight sets by Ukraine in the quarterfinals. They subsequently lost to Egypt before defeating the US team again in their classification matches to finish seventh out of 16 teams.

At continental level, the People's Republic of China are back-to-back Asian Games silver medallists, having lost both finals to the dominant Iranian team.
