He was encouraged to begin rifle shooting by a former marine, Pedro Aquino, who he watched compete at an event for wounded military veterans. "I loved watching him shoot. At the end of the event, we went to the range, and he gave me his gold medal. A few days later he asked if I wanted to try out shooting, and I was like why not. At some point, I ended up shooting a 10.9 in my very first day shooting. That's what sparked my love for shooting. I was flabbergasted that shooting was an option for me, but seeing all the Paralympic positions and shooting types, then it was not as daunting." Impairment Details
He was born with arthrogryposis, which describes multiple joint contractures. At age four he had both legs amputated at the knee after being asked by his parents if he wanted to have the surgery. "I said yes because it would be my only chance to ever walk in my life. Back then I didn't understand as much. Growing up I didn't like my disability. It was a hard thing to accept. We moved from Texas to Virginia [in 2010], and that was when I got my prosthetics and physical therapy. While I was there, I met a lot of people who were injured in the military. It was a very humbling thing because I've been an amputee since I was four years old, whereas these guys were injured a couple of months before. They are soldiers, strong dudes, and that's a lot easier for me than it is for them. It made me realise that it's not really as bad as it could be. That's when I wanted to start doing something more. FUTURE PLANS
He hopes to become a coach and run his own shooting range. "I want to become a coach and build a range that, if possible, is better than the one here [in Colorado Springs, CO, United States of America]. It's all indoor here. Every competition, beside the one here, is held outdoors. I'd love to have an outdoor range, and an inside range with a wind simulator.
