He has kept the bullet that he was shot with in 2010. It was recovered during surgery. "I always keep it with me, in my left pocket. And apparently it actually brought me luck. That's why it has a very special meaning." (spiegel.de, 13 Sep 2020)

"Shooting is such a highly complex sport with so many processes. You must never be negative, you always have to accept the situation and pull something positive out of the negative yourself." (teamdeutschland-paralympics.de, 21 Apr 2020)

Impairment Details
In October 2010 he was shot in his left shoulder while serving with the German armed forces in Kunduz, Afghanistan. The injury resulted in him losing all mobility in his left shoulder and arm. (wiesbadener-tagblatt.de, 01 Feb 2014)

General
ARMY VETERAN
When he was shot in 2010 while serving in the German armed forces in Afghanistan, the bullet narrowly missed his head, and he was flown out of the combat area to receive life-saving surgery. He was operated on for 17 hours, and two metal plates were inserted into his shoulder. "I wanted to get an overview of my comrades who were behind me and turned around, and I was hit. I would not be sitting here otherwise [if he had not turned round]. It was a few centimetres away from my head. You never forget such events in your life, they always stay there. You can't just delete the memory. I had a lot of mental problems. Only sport brought me back. The decision to take up shooting Para sport was the best I could make."
