He was scouted by a rowing coach at Gonzaga University. He was later encouraged to try Para rowing by his university academic athletic adviser. "I came out for my first practice on the water and I just immediately fell in love it. It was really special. It was awesome. My academic athletic adviser Amanda Flores, I was in her office just kind of talking. She was like, 'Hey Charley I was looking at rowing and I noticed that there's this whole Para category of rowing', which is nothing I'd ever thought of because I try to live my life as if I'm not disabled at all. I try to not let anything hold me back. We started looking at it and I was like, 'Wow this is incredible. I think I classify for this'." (gonzagabulletin.com, 08 Mar 2018; krem.com, 30 Apr 2019)

Origin of Impairment
Acquired (gonzagabulletin.com, 24 Oct 2018)

Impairment Details
He sustained a spinal cord injury as a result of falling from a rope swing during his junior year of high school. He had a metal rod inserted in his back and lost 90% of the mobility in his right calf. "It was a rope swing I'd gone on 100 times before. It was something I'd always done. Before I made it out over the cliff, like over the water, the rope snapped and I fell, and instead of falling into the water, I fell onto the shore. I had burst fractures in my L3, L4, and L5 vertebrae. As they burst out it partially severed my spinal cord so I have pretty severe nerve damage to my right leg." General
CHANGE OF MINDSET
After sustaining a spinal cord injury during his junior year of high school, he wanted to continue competing in able-bodied sport and went on to compete in able-bodied rowing at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA, United States of America. He decided to get classified for Para rowing after his academic athletic adviser at university suggested he try the sport. "Since my injury, for the longest time, the outlook I took on it was, 'I'm not disabled, I want to be able to do anything that other people can do and don't want to set any limitations on myself'. So, I never personally saw myself as Para [athlete]. It was just nerve-wracking [getting classified] because you start having all of these big dreams and goals and it really could all end if they were like, 'Sorry you don't classify'. Then there's nothing you can do." (gonzagabulletin.com, 24 Oct 2018)
