He used to play wheelchair hockey. One day his team tried using an ergometer during a training session, and he was by far the best of his team. He was then contacted by rowing coach Martin Lauriks, who asked him to compete at the 2012 Dutch indoor Para rowing championships. "In the end I went full-time for rowing and then it all went fast. I was busy with my dream of going to the Paralympics one day. Hockey wasn't a Paralympic sport, so I was already thinking about switching sports. So the rowing outing came at the right time." General
ROWING PARTNER
After taking up Para rowing, he competed with Dutch rower Esther van der Loos until her retirement after the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In 2017 he started a new partnership with Annika van der Meer. "Annika has a lot of power. I have that too. I have a well-developed upper body and my muscles are strong. The engine that we form together is good, the combination with power is very good." (nlroei.nl, 11 Oct 2017; Facebook team page, 19 Sep 2017)

POST-TOKYO PLANS
He says while he expects his rowing partner Annika van der Meer to retire following the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, he has no intentions to do the same. "It's pretty obvious Annika's going to quit after the Paralympics. And it doesn't look like I'm finding another partner. But in October I'm going back to Shanghai for the World Cup. I'm going to defend my title in the single sculls there. And in 2022 I also want to continue rowing in the single sculls. I want to see what I can achieve if I train individually for a year and push myself hard. I want to see if I can push any more boundaries. Can I set times that might last another 10 years? It's a bit of an exaggeration to say that I want to make history, but I really want to leave something behind in this sport." (pzc.nl, 15 May 2021)
