He initially practised sailing before a friend encouraged him to try rowing. He enjoyed able-bodied rowing and wanted to remain involved in the sport following his accident. Impairment Details
His left leg is paralysed as a result of being struck by a car while riding his motorcycle in 2004. He was thrown 15 metres in the collision, and fell into a coma. He underwent more than 20 operations, had multiple skin and bone grafts, and required one year of wheelchair rehabilitation following the accident. MOVING ON
Ahead of the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, he tracked down the driver of the car who caused his motorcycle accident in 2004, and sent him tickets to his rowing event at the 2012 Games. The driver came to watch him compete, and they met up after the Games in a bar. "It was like a sign [this happening in 2012], because it was an Englishman who hit me. He came to watch me row. Meeting him after was very emotional, but that was my goal. I needed to understand what happened that day, why he drove through that intersection without paying attention, because he had never shown up to the court proceedings after the accident. He was not the person I imagined him to be. He was a family man, a music lover, just a normal person. He too felt as if the story had not reached its conclusion, but he also felt so guilty that he thought about not coming to meet me. I found him to be genuine. We drank some beers, and there were some tears. Everything made sense after. I had filled an empty void. It was a victory, not necessarily a sporting victory, but it made me realise that I still carried anger inside but now I could turn the page and move on." (rameurs-tricolores.fr, 25 Apr 2019)
