He was inspired to begin powerlifting after reading about a person who overcame a physical impairment to compete at an elite level in sport. However, there were no competitions for Para powerlifters in Japan so he competed at able-bodied powerlifting tournaments until 2000, when the first Para powerlifting competition was launched.
