He had the choice to join either a ballet or judo club at the RAF base his family lived on. "My mum made me do ballet first. I didn't mind it, but my body wasn't quite suited to it. I did it for a couple of weeks but it wasn't for me so I then chose judo. At first it was just something to do but as we went on it got a bit more fun. I started to take it seriously when I first got into the England squad, the mainstream one. We started winning a few competitions but then found out I was visually impaired so came across to this [Para judo] squad and it just went up and up." GROWING UP
He spent his childhood living on a Royal Air Force [RAF] base as his father was in the British Army. He says it was a different upbringing to most children but it helped him grow up. "You'd normally have one shop, there's normally a pub or something and it's just a small community. We all know each other. You'd walk down a street and you'd know that guy, he's your dad's pal, but there's not a lot of kids around. The majority of the kids at the school you go to are Army kids so you don't really get away from it. But it was a good area to grow up in. It teaches you respect, it teaches you how to be a proper adult." (SportSpiel podcast, 11 Nov 2018)
