He was encouraged to join a judo team by a childhood friend. He decided to switch to Para judo after meeting Japanese Para judoka Osamu Takagaki. He left Tenri University in order to take up Para judo at a school for people with visual impairments. "I wanted to become a police officer after completing studies at university, but I discovered that I had to pass a test for vision. Therefore I gave it up.
