His friend's father coached able-bodied judo at a local youth sports club and encouraged him to try the sport. He then gave up able-bodied judo on the advice of his doctor. He was introduced to Para judo by a teacher at an acupuncture school for people with vision impairments. "He encouraged me to return to the scene after he discovered my sporting career as a judoka. I didn't really want to resume judo, but I decided to compete again for my parents as at that time it was close to the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing and my parents were looking forward to going."
