His older brother Luis Daniel Gavilan Lorenzo has also represented Spain in Para judo. He competed in the 66kg category at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, won bronze at the European championships in 2013, 2015 and 2017, and finished seventh at the 2019 edition.
