Her older brother had a passion for martial arts and encouraged her to try the sport. She initially competed in able-bodied judo, but her coach encouraged her to switch to Para judo. "I had the goal to compete at the national championship [able-bodied] and told a coach that if I lose I would switch to Para judo to look for the qualification to the Paralympic Games [2004 in Athens]. I won the championship, rejected his offer and continued practising able-bodied judo. But since 2005 I was left out of international competitions. In 2007 I knew there was a chance to compete in [the 2008 Paralympic Games in] Beijing and focused on my preparation. It wasn't until I was in Beijing that I realised what I had done." General
BREAK AND RETURN
She took time away from the sport after a disappointing performance at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. She returned to Para judo in 2014 and says she was able to use the negative experience from London to help her preparations ahead of the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where she won gold in the -70kg category. "After London I was away from competitions. During all 2013 I did not take part in any competition because I was thinking what would be next for me. I returned in 2014 but not in the best way. In London I was overconfident and didn't win anything. But if that had not happened maybe I wouldn't have won in Rio [in 2016] as I had a different process than in previous [Paralympic] cycles. When I arrived to Rio, the truth is that I did not feel like one of the favourites. But once I step on the tatami I just knew it was my moment, and it really was." (reporteindigo.com, 08 May 2020)
