She took up ju-jitsu as a child before switching to judo in 1998. At age 21 she began competing in Para judo. (Athlete, 02 Nov 2011; marca.com, 17 May 2020)

Her older brother had a passion for martial arts and encouraged her to try the sport. She initially competed in able-bodied judo, but her coach encouraged her to switch to Para judo. "I had the goal to compete at the national championship [able-bodied] and told a coach that if I lose I would switch to Para judo to look for the qualification to the Paralympic Games [2004 in Athens]. I won the championship, rejected his offer and continued practising able-bodied judo. But since 2005 I was left out of international competitions. In 2007 I knew there was a chance to compete in [the 2008 Paralympic Games in] Beijing and focused on my preparation. It wasn't until I was in Beijing that I realised what I had done."
