General
PLANNING FOR PARIS
He had originally planned to retire after the 2018 World Championships, but remained in the sport after winning silver at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He says he would like to keep competing for the 2024 Games in Paris. "If you are able to represent your country in Tokyo, then why not? At 50 years old [speaking in 2020], I am already in the first part of the Paralympic cycle for 2024. If nothing happens to me, I will stay in the sport." (globoesporte.globo.com, 24 Oct 2020; extra.globo.com, 09 Sep 2016)

CHANGING CATEGORIES
He has changed categories three times during his career. "My body has changed a lot since 1996, when I competed in the -86kg category. I changed to the -90kg category in 2000, and I have been in the -100kg category since 2004. My greatest concern is not my physical shape, I do like to have a belly, but remaining injury free." (globoesporte.globo.com, 24 Oct 2020)

Milestones

He became the first Para judoka from any nation to win four gold medals at the Paralympic Games when he triumphed in the -100kg category at the 2008 edition in Beijing. With his bronze medal at the 2012 Games in London, he became the first Para judoka to win five medals of any colour at the Paralympic Games, a record he extended to six with his silver medal at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. (SportsDeskOnline, 10 May 2021; beijing2008.cn, 29 Sep 2008)

At age 45 years and 322 days, his silver medal in the -100kg category made him the oldest athlete from any nation to win a Para judo medal at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He was also the oldest male Para judoka to win a medal at the 2012 Games in London, when he won bronze at age 41 years and 313 days. (SportsDeskOnline, 13 May 2021)
