General Interest

General
Qualifying as hosts, Japan are competing at their fifth Paralympic Games and looking for their third Paralympic medal. The team won bronze on their debut at the Games in 2004 and claimed gold at London 2012, where they defeated the Chinese team 1-0 in the final.

At Rio 2016 the People's Republic of China gained a measure of revenge for 2012 by beating Japan 5-3 in the quarterfinals. The Japanese team had progressed from their group with wins over Brazil and Algeria, a draw with Israel, and a defeat to the US team.

Japan have made five world championship appearances since 2002. They have not won a medal at the tournament in that period, coming closest to the podium in 2014 when they lost the third-place match to Turkey. At the 2018 World Championships in Malmo, they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Canada.
