The People's Republic of China's victory at the 2019 Asia-Pacific Championships in Chiba ensured they would return to Japan for Tokyo 2020. The Chinese team have won silver at every Paralympic Games since 2008, and will be hoping to go one better this time.

The Chinese women lost to Turkey twice at Rio 2016 - once in the group stage, and again in the gold medal match. They won every other match in Rio, including a 5-3 victory over Japan in the quarterfinals that avenged defeat to the Japanese team in the gold medal match at London 2012. They then overcame hosts Brazil before the Turkish team prevailed 4-1 in the final. As hosts at the 2008 Games, they were beaten to gold by the US team.

The People's Republic of China won the world title in 2010, having claimed silver at the tournament four years earlier. Since 2010 they have made two world championship appearances, but are yet to add to their medal haul. At the 2018 World Championships in Malmo they failed to progress beyond the pool phase.
