The Japanese men's goalball team are making their first Paralympic appearance in Tokyo, having qualified as hosts of the tournament.

Japan missed out on making the quarterfinals at the most recent edition of the world championships in 2018 in Malmo. They claimed three wins over Canada, Czech Republic and Egypt from their seven group matches in Sweden. But defeats against Brazil, Islamic Republic of Iran, Germany and the United States of America saw them finish fifth in their group, one place shy of qualification for the knockout stages.

At continental level Japan finished third at the latest edition of the Asia-Pacific championships in 2019, after defeating the Republic of Korea in the bronze medal match. In 2018, Japan lost to the Korean team in the bronze medal match at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia.
