Algeria first competed at the Paralympic Games in 1992 as late replacements for Libya. They failed to win a game in Barcelona, and finished last out of 12 teams. The Algerian team's next appearance was in London in 2012, where they posted their first Paralympic victory against Belgium in the group stage, but were eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual bronze medallists Turkey.

At Rio 2016, Algeria recorded one group victory over Canada, and concluded the group stage with the same number of points as Germany and Canada. However, a worse goal difference meant the Algerians finished bottom of the group and did not progress to the quarterfinals.

At the 2018 World Championships in Malmo, the Algerian team posted two group wins over Argentina and Turkey, but defeats to Belgium, Lithuania, People's Republic of China, Sweden and Australia saw them fail to progress from the group stage and finish ranked 11th overall.

Algeria qualified for Tokyo after claiming victory at the 2020 African Championships that were held in Egypt in March 2020.
