Japan qualified for Tokyo 2020 as hosts and are making their first appearance at the Paralympic Games.

The Japanese team last competed at global level at the 2014 World Championship, where they were ranked sixth. They also took part in the world championships in 2006 and 2010, placing seventh and eighth, respectively.

Japan won the silver medal at the 2014 Asian Para Games in Incheon after recording one victory, two draws, and one defeat. They finished level on points with third-placed People's Republic of China but placed second on the podium thanks to a superior goal difference.
