She was always attracted to the sport growing up and she later became a professional stunt person, specialising in horsemanship. Following her accident in 2000, she refocused on Para dressage. "It was something I enjoyed and had a talent for. I did many equestrian sports but did not choose dressage until after my accident as it was the sport most available to a rider with an impairment at international level." Impairment Details
She has paraplegia as the result of an accident in 2000. While on a ranch, a bale of hay weighing around 45 kilograms fell 10 feet and landed on her back, leaving her with two broken vertebrae and a severed spinal cord. (laurenbarwick.typepad.com, 17 Sep 2008)

POST-TOKYO PLANS
She plans to focus more on instructing than competing after the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. "I'd like to transition from competition to retiring, and stay home more with my family. FILM INDUSTRY CAREER
Before her accident in 2000 she worked in the film industry as a stunt person specialising in horses, and worked on films such as 'The Pledge'. In 2011 she guest starred on the Canadian television show 'Heartland' in a storyline involving a former rodeo star who had sustained paralysis.
