Her mother Merja Laru competed in dressage at national level and later became a coach, so Pia-Pauliina followed in her footsteps. She initially competed in both showjumping and dressage, but dressage was her favourite and she eventually started focusing on the discipline. (ratsastus.fi, 2018)

She and her husband Ari run a dairy farm in Mantsala, Finland which hosts over 100 dairy cows as well as their horses. "We mainly handle everything ourselves. I'm sure it's 100 feet from the door to the barn and the garage. The whole family live in this same way. Kids are sensible, they understand our work.
