He took up Para cycling in 2017. (bola.com, 27 Feb 2017)
:
He was offered the chance to join the national Para cycling team by the Indonesian Cycling Federation [ISSI] chairman Raja Sapta Oktohari. "Cycling was the friendliest sport for me at the time. I was new with a prosthetic, so I couldn't run. Bicycles have handles, wheels, brakes, so it was all familiar to me. I was only beginning some cycling sessions when ISSI invited me to join. I was happy to be back competing because I was given a target to win in competitions. Being an elite racer is not a new thing for me. Even though it was in cycling, I was still enthusiastic." Acquired (suara.com, 13 Aug 2021)

Impairment Details
He used to be a professional motorbike racer and was waving to the crowd after winning the 2015 Asia Road Racing Championship in Bogor, Indonesia, when he was hit from behind by another rider. He sustained a serious injury to his left leg and in January 2016, following multiple operations, he decided to have the limb amputated. "It happened pretty fast, I didn't think it would happen because I had crossed the finish line and I was celebrating. Suddenly someone hit me from behind. The nerves in my legs were damaged permanently. I was getting frustrated and didn't want to continue living in uncertainty. I finally decided to have an amputation." General
SWITCHING TO PARA CYCLING
He initially planned to return to racing motorbikes after his amputation. "I started cycling basically as a form of therapy, to train my right foot and familiarise myself with my impairment in order to return to motor racing. I did try riding my motorcycle, but it turned out I couldn't endure heavy riding anymore. But then, after weeks of training in Para cycling, I found that my physical condition became stronger than before my accident. I just felt more energetic. So, I decided to take up Para cycling." MOTIVATION
His son Ali was born two weeks after he was involved in his motorbike accident in 2015. "When Ali was born, at the same hospital where I was treated, I was motivated to rise from my injuries. I was basically competing against Ali to learn how to walk. I wanted to be an example for Ali, that if you fight for something, you will achieve it." (cnnindonesia.com, 15 Jul 2019; Najwa Shihab YouTube channel, 18 Oct 2018)

MEETING WITH JAKKRIT
He sustained his impairment after he was hit from behind by Thai motorbike racer Jakkrit Sawangswat at the 2015 Asia Road Racing Championship in Bogor, Indonesia. "We met in 2016, but it was awkward. We just said hello to each other. Then I heard he had stopped racing ever since he hit me in 2015. I was sad to learn about it because I've already moved on and started something new. I got the chance to meet him again [in 2018] in Buriram, Thailand. We were attending an event and I asked my friend to arrange a meeting with him. I just couldn't stop thinking about him quitting the sport because of what had happened. He said that he was sorry about my leg but I immediately told him that everything happened for a reason. I told him that he was younger than me, and still had the chance to succeed in the sport so he should keep on going. I'm glad that he took my advice and has since returned to the track." OCCUPATION
In 2019 he began working as a civil servant at the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Indonesia. (motorplus-online.com, 14 Aug 2021; jawapos.com, 02 Jul 2019)

RACING SCHOOL
He runs 43 Racing School, a motorcycle racing club in Bogor, Indonesia. (43 Racing School Instagram profile, 16 Aug 2021; motorplus-online.com, 14 Aug 2021)
