She took up rowing when she was younger, and some of her teammates did cycling in their spare time. "I thought it sounded cool, but I wasn't sure if I could ride or modify a bike to be what I needed. But I met a guy in college who worked at a bike shop. He said I could definitely modify a bike, and that riding was totally a possibility. After studying, I sought an atypical professional path, working as a travel guide, leading hiking and cycling tours around the US and Europe. It was through this work that I became connected with US Paralympics in May of 2018, and soon re-discovered my athletic prowess after attending a Talent Identification camp for cycling." Type of Impairment
Spinal Cord Injuries (bicycling.com, 07 Jan 2019)

Origin of Impairment
Acquired (bicycling.com, 07 Jan 2019)

Impairment Details
At age 12 she fractured her C5 and C6 vertebrae at gymnastics practice. She initially had no feeling from the neck down but after two-and-a-half months of rehabilitation at a specialist medical centre, she was able to run on a treadmill. "My life was forever changed from that injury. I was already a very motivated and dedicated athlete, but that experience changed the way I now look at physical activity. It was a priority of mine to stay healthy, and I just always believed I'd recover." (bicycling.com, 07 Jan 2019)

General
PARTNER AND COACH
Her partner Noah Middlestaedt is also her coach. "It's actually a really good thing for both of us, because we can share so much. We share our training, our lives, everything. I love having him with me. I think it's really forced us to improve our communication, you need to talk about things in order to have it work. I think we have come a long way there." (teamusa.org, 15 Nov 2020)

OTHER ACTIVITIES
She has served as an ambassador for Outride, an organisation that runs cycling programmes for children to improve social and mental health. She has also worked on obtaining her private pilot's license. (bicycling.com, 31 Mar 2021; teamusa.org, 01 Jan 2020)
