He decided to take up Para cycling to see how his body would respond to intense physical effort after he went on a cycling tour of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, Canada. He was also inspired after hearing about Canadian Para cyclist Ross Wilson, who also has an impairment as a result of Charcot-Marie-Tooth [CMT].
