In 2003 he was cycling at a school camp near Brienz, Switzerland, when a car came towards him at a corner. He used his brakes but lost control of his bike and fell under a bus. He is paralysed from the neck down and has restricted use of his arms. (20min.ch, 19 Aug 2012)
