She played ice hockey before her accident. Canadian wheelchair basketball player Erica Gavel contacted her after hearing her story, and suggested she take up Para sport. Shaw then got in touch with the Canadian Paralympic Committee, who invited her to a national training camp. "I was saying, 'Hey. I like cycling, and I have a brain injury. What do I do?' I think it was my background in hockey that allowed me to become a strong cyclist, because I built the leg strength and power." During the northern hemisphere summer she does road training for between 10 and 20 hours a week in Saskatchewan, Canada. She travels to Milton, ON, Canada, for track sessions. Impairment Details
In 2009 she fell off a horse and suffered a brain injury, resulting in paralysis of the left side of her body. Following rehabilitation she regained approximately 60% function in her upper body, and 65% in her lower body. (thestarphoenix.com, 03 Apr 2020; Canadian Cycling Magazine, 15 May 2019)

She studied kinesiology and exercise science at Dalhousie University in Canada for a year before transferring to complete her bachelor's degree at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, SK, Canada. She then completed a master's degree in kinesiology and exercise science at the University of Saskatchewan, and has studied for a PhD in the same subject.
