He took part in a charity bike ride across Ireland from Mizen to Malin for the Irish Guide Dogs charity and realised he enjoyed the sport. "The spark that lit the flame. Being a guide dog owner myself, I was coaxed onto the back of a tandem. I had longer hair and a bit more weight on me, being a student in Galway [Ireland] at the time. I loved it. Impairment Details
He lost his sight in 2002 after sustaining a detached retina while on a trip to London, England. He was born with glaucoma and had several operations as a child to correct the condition, but the detached retina made it worse. "Whether you're [age] 17 or 77, there's no good time. But I was at an age where I hadn't made huge life decisions, in terms of my education or where I lived, those kinds of things. I was fortunate from that perspective." PILOT PARTNERSHIP
He teamed up with his pilot Eamonn Byrne in 2016 after strength and conditioning coach Conor Fitzgerald put the pair in touch with each other. Fitzgerald's sister Sarah had been Gordon's tandem partner on a charity bike ride across Ireland from Mizen to Malin. At the time he was considering quitting endurance cycling and taking up rowing. VALUABLE TRIP
He met his partner Louise when he was studying to become a barrister at King's Inns in Dublin, Ireland. "I met Louise when she tripped up over my guide dog. She tripped up over the dog and she came over to apologise and we got talking.
