He competed in able-bodied powerlifting at international level. Since his injury he has represented Great Britain in Para cycling, including at the 2007 Road World Championships in Bordeaux, France, and in shooting Para sport. He was previously involved in powerlifting, cycling and shooting. In 2012 he was invited to attend a talent identification day for Para canoe in Nottingham, England. "I realised that I would no longer be able to compete in handcycling at international level and it was time to look for yet another sport. I didn't want to give up on sport. Someone told me about Para canoeing. The cycling and powerlifting work quite well with Para canoe - the gym work, the power and strength, and then you have the endurance and speed work on the bike."
