He was previously involved in powerlifting, cycling and shooting. In 2012 he was invited to attend a talent identification day for Para canoe in Nottingham, England. "I realised that I would no longer be able to compete in handcycling at international level and it was time to look for yet another sport. I didn't want to give up on sport. Someone told me about Para canoeing. The cycling and powerlifting work quite well with Para canoe - the gym work, the power and strength, and then you have the endurance and speed work on the bike." Acquired (ianmarsden.com, 31 Mar 2016)

Impairment Details
He has used a wheelchair since sustaining a spinal injury in 1992. In 2009 he was taken to hospital for what he believed to be a prolapse of the neck but doctors diagnosed a rare motor neurone condition that affects the brain and the strength in his arms and legs. This meant he could no longer compete as a powerlifter or handcyclist. (britishcanoeing.org.uk, 27 Aug 2017; ianmarsden.com, 01 Jul 2011)

General
MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER
He has worked as a motivational speaker, delivering talks in schools and hospitals to recount his experience as a Para athlete. "It's important to get into places like hospital spinal units and encourage people to use sport as part of their rehab. Many Paralympians started that way - taking up sport to aid their recovery and then finding that they liked it and were good at it. The good news is that there are so many more organisations now who can help people rehabilitate themselves through sport and exercise. 20 years ago, when I did my back in, things were very different - you were told to lie down and rest. Today everything is keyed to keeping you motivated and on the move." (sports-insight.co.uk, 22 Jun 2018)
