RETIREMENT THOUGHTS
In late 2020 he said he had considered retiring from the sport at the end of 2021. "It is not yet certain whether I will continue [beyond 2021]. I will have Tokyo 2020 and then the European championships [in November 2021]. I just look at what is possible each week and if there are new developments. I'm pretty sure that at some point everyone in elite sport thinks, 'I'm quitting'. So do I. And yet you often end up still loving your sport. You shouldn't have any lingering regrets left, because you'll take that with you forever. That is something I consider. What happens next depends on how 2021 goes with COVID-19, tournaments and of course also my body." (tubantia.nl, 30 Dec 2020)
