He took up able-bodied badminton at age seven. He began competing in Para badminton in 2009. (tribunnews.com, 05 Oct 2018; asiangames.tempo.co, 02 Oct 2018)
:
He was influenced by his father to take up badminton. His father was also the one who motivated him to pursue Para badminton after his amputation. "I preferred football as a child. But my father kept asking me to watch badminton tournaments on television, I remember Taufik Hidayat was playing. So, I was influenced I guess, since my father was also a badminton player. He always said to me [after the amputation], you can come back, you can be the winner again in Para badminton. He kept inviting me to train while I was still depressed with the amputation. He even invited my former coach to spend nights at our home to train me." (BadmintonWorld.tv YouTube channel, 19 Sep 2019; Trans7 Official YouTube channel, 16 Oct 2018; tribunnews.com, 05 Oct 2018)

Impairment Details
His left arm was amputated at age 11 as a result of a motorcycle accident. (BadmintonWorld.tv YouTube channel, 19 Sep 2019; Trans7 Official YouTube channel, 16 Oct 2018; asiangames.tempo.co, 02 Oct 2018)

General
PROSTHESIS
He decided to stop wearing prosthesis after joining a Para badminton training camp in Solo, Indonesia, in 2009. "In 2006 my left arm was amputated and I stopped playing badminton for three years. I was wearing prosthesis but I saw my friends [at the training camp] who looked natural and free without wearing one. So, I thought I didn't have anything more to cover." (kumparan.com, 27 Sep 2018)

EARLY DAYS
He says it was hard to keep a balanced position during his early days practising Para badminton due to losing his left arm. "It was literally very hard to have a proper body positioning while playing without my left arm. But then I also learned that each of my teammates or competitors have their own issues [with their impairments]. That was when I realised we as Para athletes were equally matched."
