He took up running after recovering from a motorcycle accident in 2010. (scottishrunningguide.com, 07 Mar 2019)
:
"Before my accident I was always quite fit. I was a marathon runner, so quite a decent athlete, I was working and training just as a hobby. During my recovery it gave me a real good sense of direction and a goal to focus on. I used to pester my physios every other day, 'Can we try a run, can we try a run?' And she was just like, 'Just wait, we need to wait'. So we made the makeshift sling, and my first run was in the gym at the physiotherapy and it was no more than four or five metres. Still to this day it gives me goosebumps when I think about that run because that was when the journey started." (Scottish Disability Sport Facebook page, 27 Jul 2020)

General
SECOND CHANCE IN TOKYO
He says he is seeking redemption at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, after failing to finish the marathon at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. "There's still unfinished business. I've waited five years to get back on the Paralympic start line so that in itself is a massive motivator, though I'm not letting it pressure me." He says he did not prepare well enough for the weather conditions at the 2016 Games. "I naively did two weeks [training] in Lanzarote [Spain] and thought, 'I'm acclimatised'. This was two weeks out from going to Rio. Going to a really warm, dry country, I didn't even look into it. I spent 12 days in Rio and the warmest day was the marathon, it was 35 degrees [Celsius] and 90% humidity. I was drenched in sweat just after my warm-up. I knew I wasn't going to finish that race after the second lap. Eventually I dropped out at 18.5 miles. It's my only race that's got 'DNF' next to it and it's the hardest one to take because it's the biggest race of my life." (Did Ye Aye? podcast, 16 Aug 2020)
