NUCLEAR DISASTER
She believes that switching to an indoor training programme during the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, which happened close to her home in Japan, meant that she was better prepared for the changes to her training regime caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. "I hardly trained outside during the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, so I focused on indoor training, including running on a treadmill. I felt that the earthquake that caused the disaster and the COVID-19 pandemic were connected in that way. After all, I realised that it was very important to keep working steadily at all times."
