His mother noticed he was quick when he would run around their garden. He also enjoyed basketball growing up but eventually switched his focus to athletics. "I was a very big basketball person and I even tried out for the basketball team in eighth grade with my vision loss. "Honestly, I didn't know too much about it. I was still competing against able-bodied athletes and people with sight. So I really didn't have any idea about anything like that.
