A coach at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offered her the opportunity to experience a racing chair. "I was introduced to Adam Bleakney, who commented that I had really long arms, which apparently is good for wheelchair racing. I brushed it off for a little while because I was like, 'I'm not really sporty'. Looking back on it, I kind of thought that I just couldn't be, not really that I didn't have an interest in it. I was new to Champaign and I was looking for a way to meet new people. I started going to track practice shortly into my freshman year and instantly loved it. It probably truly was a social thing for me." (Applied Health Sciences at Illinois YouTube channel, 30 Sep 2019; Athlete, 17 Jul 2017)
