He wanted to continue competing in sport after his injury. He first tried wheelchair basketball through Adaptive Sports Iowa but realised it was not for him. He then tried Para powerlifting and discus before deciding to focus on the javelin. "This is not for me [wheelchair basketball]. So I said, 'Hey, what else is there?'
