Her high school gym teacher introduced her to athletics and she competed in hammer throw before she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She decided to continue with the sport to build her strength and fitness after watching the 2012 Paralympic Games in London on television. "I started track, not because I thought I'd be going to the Paralympics, it was sort of an unintended consequence. I started because I knew I needed to get a consistent level of activity, and I needed someone to help me with that."
