Shortly after his accident he attended the 2005 National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Minneapolis, MN, United States of America, and was inspired to try Para sport. He tried several sports, including skiing, basketball and tennis, before choosing to pursue archery after attending clinics hosted by US Paralympic archers Jerry Shields, Jeff Fabry and Russell Wolfe. "Originally it would be once a month, that turned into four times a month and that turned into me wanting to buy a bow and try to get better and better. You're always trying to make yourself better. There is a certain discipline that you need to have. Everywhere I went, people were willing to help. It became addictive." (wcjb.com, 19 Jan 2020; usopm.org, 01 Jan 2020; pva.org, 18 Sep 2016)

MILITARY APPROACH
He served in the US Navy and says his navy experience helps him in archery. "I think the military experience gives me the extra mental attitude. When you are conducting any type of operation for the Navy, whether it's fighting a fire on the ship, refuelling two ships while they're moving side by side, driving small boats during operations, or just everyday shipboard life, you have to maintain your focus or someone can be seriously hurt."
