She grew up in Trinidad and Tobago before moving to Nashville when she was in middle school. Her father Sterling GITTENS has worked as a gospel singer. 'Life was all about music, not even sports. The women in the family are athletes, and the men are musicians.'

She initially focused on the 400m before switching to the long jump. She pursued the sport more seriously after finishing 6th at the Nigerian national championships. Retired from competitive athletics in 2016 after tearing her Achilles tendon but returned in 2018. 'It was so heartbreaking. I'd missed the 2012 Olympics and was going to miss 2016. I came back because I really believed I'd regret it if I didn't.'

She says that winning a gold medal at 2019 PanAm Games in Lima, Peru, was extra special as she had come through a difficult period where she struggled for consistency and considered quitting the sport.

'I think Covid really set me up for success, just because I wasn't ready for the Olympics in 2020 due to injuries.' Her partner Hunter WOODHALL won two medals in athletics for the USA at the 2016 Paralympic Games.
